Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) - At Deane, we PAWS before we act.
The implementation of PBIS involves explicitly prompting, modeling, practicing, and encouraging positive expected social skills/behaviors across all settings of a school and with all individuals.
We believe that when students are taught to effectively use these social skills for themselves and with others school climates will become more positive, learning environments will be safer, and student-educator relationships will be more trusting and respectful.
What we hope students and educators will experience through PBIS:
- Reductions in major disciplinary infractions, antisocial behavior, and substance abuse.
- Reductions in aggressive behavior and improvements in emotional regulation.
- Improvements in academic engagement and achievement.
- Improvements in perceptions of organizational health and school safety.
- Reductions in teacher and student-reported bullying behavior and victimization.
- Improvements in perceptions of school climate.
- Reductions in teacher turnover.
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
How do we identify when students need additional support?
In Jeffco, we define a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) as a systemic, continuous improvement framework in which data-based decision-making is practiced across all levels of the educational system in order to increase outcomes for each and every student. This prevention-based framework is the equitable “way of doing business” which utilizes high-quality evidence-based instruction, intervention, and assessment practices to ensure that every student receives what they need in order to be successful.
Social Emotional Learning in Jeffco

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which students and adults gain and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges.
Jeffco has adopted the five core competencies of SEL outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making (CASEL, 2020)
SEL happens in safe and supportive school, family and community environments that support development and provide opportunities and recognition for successfully applying skills.
